Sales of recreational marijuana in California began on January 1 and many people are yet to get what exactly it will be to live with the legalization of recreational marijuana. Adults aged 21 years and above will now freely access recreational marijuana, but not without complying with the new possession and usage rules. For non medical use, one is allowed to keep up to 6 plants at home, and this does not require a doctor’s letter.

Where can I buy recreational marijuana in California?
Although recreational marijuana was legalized officially starting 2018, there is still vacuum when you think about access to the same. California issued temporary licenses to dispensaries in December that allows them to stock non-medical marijuana, but not all regions are covered and you would need to wait longer to get a shop near you that can sell recreational marijuana. State rules state that there will be no sale of marijuana between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The availability of recreational cannabis might not be as ready as some people would want to believe. Reason is that some counties also have the power to control businesses that deal in recreational marijuana and some of them are barring the sale of recreational pot within their borders. This means some regions will not get an opportunity to enjoy the freedom granted through the passing of Proposition 64.

Costs involved
Unlike medical marijuana, recreational marijuana will come with a number of taxes and costs that will later be passed over to the consumer. This will in effect mean consumers will need to spend more for an amount that a medical user can get cheaper.

The reason the cost is expected to be high is because there are taxes that sellers and buyers have to pay. State law states that there shall be a 15% tax on sales, and this will amount to $1 billion annually in revenue. Each time they buy marijuana, Californians might be required to pay an additional 45% effective tax, so marijuana could become more expensive. Prices are projected to go as high up as 20%, which could translate to $2 more per gram.

Can I consume recreational marijuana in public?
Using marijuana in public places remains illegal. You cannot consume it on sidewalks and around places where tobacco smoking is prohibited. Doing any of these could see you pay a penalty or fine, sometimes amounting up to $250. You also have to understand it’s not allowed to light up while driving, so basically the best place to use recreational marijuana is at a private home, because some landlords may impose strict prohibitions against smoking marijuana in their premises.

Federal laws
On the federal level, cannabis sale is still illegal. That presents a potential obstacle that could squash the recreational cannabis boom in California. With the trump administration having people who are against the legalization of marijuana, the newfound glory might not last as long as people expect. However, it is the hope of everyone who loves cannabis that such a thing does not happen any time in future.

Some patients wonder if they still need a medical marijuana card in California for 2018?
